 French bulldog

French Bulldogs are thought to be descendants of the British Bulldog. The British (or English) Bulldog is bigger and stronger. Some of the smaller bulldogs were taken to France by British emigrants.

Do contact ALL the breeders on this page, and if they have puppies, arrange a video call to see them. It's fun to watch puppies playing with each other!

NB non-standard colours can be registered but are not accepted in the show ring. They are sold as pets.

About French bulldogs

The French bulldog is smaller than its English counterpart, and has erect, bat-like ears. He has a large, square head.

He is a happy-natured dog and makes a good loyal companion. He will often snort when excited. They can make a noise when they want attention, so start obedience training right away!

Frenchies are born with short tails (sometimes almost no tail) – they are not surgically docked.  

ACCEPTABLE COLOURS AS PER KUSA BREED STANDARD:

* Brindle: Fawn coat moderately characterised by transversal dark brindling, creating a 'tiger-marked' effect. Strongly brindled coats must not cover out the fawn ground colour. A black mask may be present. Limited white spotting is admissible.

* Fawn: Solid coat, from light fawn to dark fawn, sometimes presenting a paler colouring of the inclined parts [ed. angled surfaces], with or without a black mask, although masked subjects are preferred. Sometimes accompanied by limited white spotting.

* Coat with white spotting:

* Pied: Brindled with moderate or important [ed. extensive] white spotting, the spotting being ideally distributed over the entire subject. Some blotches on the skin are admissible.

* Fawn and white: Fawn with moderate or important white spotting, the spotting being ideally distributed over the entire dog. Some blotches of the skin are tolerated.

* The nose is always black, never brown or blue.

* All-white subjects – provided the edge of eye rims and nose are black – are admitted, but not bred to, because of a risk of deafness.

OTHER COLOURS:

Breeders might experiment with other colours but KUSA registers these as "Non-standard colours." Dogs that are non-standard colours can be registered, but it's a limited registration with a note to say that they are not correct – "COLOUR NOT KUSA RECOGNISED." They are not accepted in the show ring.

Weight: dogs 12.7 kg, females 11 kg.

Height: 28 - 33 cms at shoulder.

You are advised not to buy "Miniature" French bulldogs as they may have health problems.
